Illustrated talk by Dr Sallie McNamara, retired Senior Lecturer in Cultural Theory
Discover how clothing has reflected changing society, aspirations and traditions through the centuries.
What does Sunday Best really mean, and why has it mattered for generations? This illustrated talk explores the social history behind the clothes we choose for life's special occasions. What we wear can reveal our identity, social status, cultural values and sense of belonging. Traditionally, families reserved their finest clothes for attending church on Sundays, but as churchgoing declined, Sunday Best came to mean dressing up for any important occasion – a seaside holiday, a wedding, a celebration or a day out. Discover how clothing has reflected changing society, aspirations and traditions through the centuries.
